An International Pi Day Poster Activity Students Will Love
Celebrate with your students using our international Pi Day poster activity that includes circular food, access to our digital poster, lesson plan, and a sample poster to get students started!

Celebrate Math with Circular Foods from Around the World
March 14th is a special day in the math world—International Pi Day! This annual event celebrates π (pi), the mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. But let’s make it even more exciting for students—by exploring pi through food!

This year, bring Pi Day to life in your classroom with a fun and creative poster activity on Canva. Students will explore the math behind circles using delicious, real-world examples like pies, cakes, pizzas, and even sushi rolls! Then, they’ll create their own educational Pi Day posters to showcase what they’ve learned.
Why Celebrate Pi Day with Circular Foods?
Pi is an essential concept in geometry, but it doesn’t have to be an abstract idea. Many of our favorite foods are circular—making them the perfect way to visualize and measure pi in action. Here are some great examples from around the world:

- Pizza (Italy) – The classic example, perfect for teaching about slices, diameter, and circumference.
- Sushi Rolls (Japan) – The cross-section of a sushi roll forms a perfect circle, ideal for discussions about circular symmetry.
- Pies (USA, UK, Canada) – Apple, cherry, or pumpkin—slicing pies into equal parts reinforces fractions and angles.
- Tortillas (Mexico) – A round flatbread that can be folded into fractions or measured for its circumference.
- Bagels (Poland) – The inner and outer circles of a bagel provide a great way to discuss pi and rings.
- Pancakes & Crepes (France, global) – A great way to measure radius and diameter before diving in for breakfast!
- Chapati (India, Africa) – This round flatbread is perfect for discussions about rolling circles.
Pairing math with food makes learning engaging, memorable, and fun. Plus, adding an artistic element like our Canva Pi Day Poster Activity helps students retain what they learn.

Learning Pi with Circular Foods
Objective:
Students will explore the mathematical constant π (pi), apply it to real-world scenarios involving circular foods, and create a Pi Day Poster using Canva.
Materials Needed:
- A variety of circular food items or printed images of them
- Rulers or measuring tape
- Paper and pencils
- A calculator
- Access to TPT and Canva for the poster activity
Lesson Breakdown:
1. Introduction to Pi (15 minutes)
- Start by asking students what they know about circles and pi.
- Explain that pi (π) is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximately 3.14159.
- Share interesting pi facts, like how it appears in architecture, space travel, and engineering.
2. Hands-On Measurement with Circular Foods (20 minutes)
- Display different circular foods (or images) and have students pick one to measure.
- Using a ruler or measuring tape, students should:
- Measure the diameter (straight across the middle).
- Measure the circumference (around the edge).
- Divide circumference ÷ diameter to see how close they get to 3.14.
- Have a discussion:
- Why does this ratio always stay the same, no matter how big or small the circle is?
- How do chefs and bakers use math when making these foods?
3. Exploring Real-World Applications (10 minutes)
- Discuss places where pi is used in real life:
- Chefs & bakers use it when cutting equal slices.
- Architects & engineers use pi to design circular structures.
- Scientists & astronauts use pi in planetary calculations.
- Ask students to think of other circular foods and how they might use math when preparing or serving them.
4. Pi Day Poster Activity on Canva (30 minutes)
Now it’s time to get creative!
- Students will create a Pi Day Poster using Canva.
- Encourage them to:
- Include circular food-themed designs (pizza, pie, sushi, bagels, etc.).
- Add fun facts about pi and the formula for circumference.
- Feature a challenge question for their classmates, such as:
“If a bagel has a diameter of 10 cm, what is its circumference?”
- Once finished, display the posters in the classroom or share them digitally with parents and other students.
Make Pi Day a Delicious Learning Experience
By celebrating Pi Day with circular foods and creative posters, students will develop a stronger understanding of pi while engaging in hands-on learning. This approach makes math relatable, fun, and interactive—and maybe even tasty if food is allowed in class!
